The 12th London (Rangers) battalion arrived in France in December 1914 and in February 1915 joined 28th Division. For the first month they were divisional troops, but in March 1915 they became part of 84 Brigade and became fully involved with divisional duties. On 17th April, 1915 they went into the front line at Zonnebeke in the Ypres salient and due east of Ypres itself. The battalion history, largely based on the battalion diary, states that this was a quiet tour with only a few casualties. Quiet it may have been for many but not for the twenty men who were killed over the next few days until they were relieved during the night of 23rd April. One of these casualties was Frederick Peters who was killed on 21st April. |
